New International School has a Saturday Program offering intensive 2½ hour classes in
English or Mandarin Chinese on one or two Saturdays each month. The program is open to the
wider community as well as to our current students. Two of the teachers, Yitao Liu for
Mandarin Chinese, and Jocelyn Josephy for English, will be continuing from last year. We have
added two more classes to be taught by Christi Toston, one of our Upper School and Senior
School teachers, who also has much experience with younger children. There will be a
maximum of 12 students in any one class.
Mr. Liu and Ms. Josephy’s classes will include skill-building activities in reading, writing, and
speaking, as well as theme-based activities. The lessons are intended to be of value to either
native or non-native speakers of each language. Ms. Toston’s classes will have the primary
object of grammar reinforcement, and preparation for English examinations such as TOEFL
and Eiken, for which reading, writing, speaking, and listening comprehension are a part.
Classes are scheduled on the following seventeen (17) Saturdays: September 22, 29. October
13, November 10, 24, December 8, January 12, 26, Feb 9, 23, March 2, 9, April 6, 20, May 11,
25, June 8. After that, parents are welcome to sign their child up for our 2013 summer
program, which will have English, Japanese, and Mandarin Chinese options. Children who are
signed up for classes both in the mornings and in the afternoons will need to bring a boxed
lunch.
If a lesson has to be cancelled on one of the above Saturdays for any reason, it will be
rescheduled for an alternative Saturday. The lesson times will be as follows:
